"Our mission is to build a worldwide gifting movement that reduces waste, saves precious resources & eases the burden on our landfills while enabling our members to benefit from the strength of a larger community" (freecycle.org).
The above statement demonstrates the driving purpose of the people of the Freecycle Network and their cause. Freecycle is an environmentally motivated group whose goal is to encourage people to "reduce, reuse, and recycle" as well as promote a better, more connected community.
Freecycle provides the opportunity for members to give away items they no longer need to other members who may need them. Membership is absolutely free and acts as a passport for individuals to recieve and give away unwanted things for absolutely NO COST. It's organized in localized groups so it's easy to find someone near you to trade with. All you have to do is go to their website at
[link] and search for a group in your area. It's really simple and easy to follow. All you have to do to get rid of all your unwanted items is post a message about it and other members from your group will be able to see it. Then, if someone is interested in your item, just send them a message to arrange for a pick-up or drop-off.
What's the benefits of Freecycling? Well, not only can you finally empty a bunch of that old unwanted junk out of your garage, or get rid of that hideous lamp your mother-in-law got you for your birthday, you can also find some pretty nifty things absolutely FREE! Also, members get a chance to meet new people! Freecycle brings people together, while encouraging a good cause.
Becoming a member is simple. Furthermore, if ever, for any reason, you wish to cancel your membership, the process is elementary and instructions are provided on the official site.
All in all, Freecycle offers numerous benefits for members, their community, and, of course, the environment. Reusing and recycling not only reduces the amount of waste deposited in landfills, but provides a financially beneficial and environmentally friendly alternative to "just chucking it."
